It looks like my essay will bump up against the 5,000-word limit. I also plan to include a list of end-note linked references to online material about this subject; can we agree that those references be excluded from the word limit?

I've been having to deal with a couple of problems on the board, and RL stuff too, so it'll be tomorrow before I start the actual Debate thread. But it looks like you two are getting things sorted out fine; David, when you have your intro post ready, just send me a PM or a comment on this post, and we can begin.

(I admit I miss Redshirt; he was an old hand at debate moderation.)

I am ready to post, Jobar. I take it you will start the debate thread, and I will post in that thread? Thanks. :)

I'm setting it up now; as soon as you see it, post your opening to it, and I'll approve it and start the clock ticking on Poli's reply.

added- http://secularcafe.org/showthread.php?t=30304. There was a delay because the site went down at a most inconvenient time!

I have tried to submit my opening argument, but it does not go through. I keep getting a message that the post must be approved first. I have never seen that here before. Is there some change or problem? :d unno:

No problem- just, Debates is a fully moderated forum, and I (or another staffer) have to approve all posts made there. It's up, now.

Politesse, when you have your reply ready, just post it to the thread, and give me a nudge (a comment on one of my posts, or a PM) and I'll approve it.

I hate to do this right off the bat, but could I beg leave for an extension on posting time? I was expecting the first volley later in the week, and thus for my response deadline to fall over the weekend when I have more time (it is finals week here at Chez Politesse)

It is fine with me. :)

OK, I'll post a note in the Debate thread that there will be an unavoidable delay in Poli's reply due to real-life issues.

Thanks for your response, Politesse. Now I must beg similar leave for not posting within three days, owing to a vacation that promises the sunny sun of Southern California. Much as I want to respond promptly, the sun deterministically calls.

My Internet access will be sporadic over the next couple of weeks but I will try to respond ASAP, just not within three days. Will that be OK?

Of course. Might be more windy than sunny judging by the rest of the week, but have fun all the same!

Yes, do. :)

Quite a good beginning, I think. I've debated the subject of free will so many times myself over the years (though never formally) I had thought I was completely burned out on it, but you guys have inspired me to comment several times. But, under the circumstances, I'll withhold them until the debate is completed.

Just message me whenever you post, David.

It's about a hundred degrees every day, and not a cloud in the sky. Perfect weather! :D

I hope to have my first rebuttal up later today, finishing it off over a couple of cold IPAs.

I'm not quite clear on the debate rules at this point. Do I get one more statement followed by a closing statement by Poitesse, or … ? :d unno:

I think that is the structure we agreed to. Presuming you are fine with that.

Yes, I'm fine with that. Being on vacation and all my brain cells are not wholly functional and I couldn't recall exactly what we agreed to. So I get one more statement, and then you get the final word? Sounds good. :)
